Dr. med. univ. Laurids Kuhn
Medical Doctor and Psychotherapist
University and Internal MedicineThe first few years after graduation from medical school in 1991 (University of Innsbruck, Austria) I worked in the area of Internal Medicine (Theresienkrankenhaus Mannheim, Germany).
Psychosomatic Hospitals - Senior PhysicianIn the following almost 12 years I dedicated myself to medical-psychosomatic work in two different psychosomatic hospitals - “Fachklink Waldmünchen” and “Fachklinik am Hardberg” - as senior physician in either case. Finally I supported a third hospital - "sysTelios Klinik” - in its opening phase. In the latter two hospitals we worked with a multigenerational perspective and included juveniles and young adults.
Psychosomatic hospitals in Germany “fill the gap” between ambulatory treatment and psychiatric hospitals and deal with diagnoses such as depression, anxieties, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, burn out, pain disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.
From Psychoanalysis to a Resource Oriented PsychotherapyInitially the approach of my clinical work was psychoanalytic. Experienced in this field I began to move towards a resource- and solution-focused psychotherapy applying myself to the development of the “Hypno-Systemic Therapy Approach”. The systemic and family therapy training I received at “Helm-Stierlin-Institute” in Heidelberg, the Hypno-Therapeutic training at “Milton-Erickson-Institute Heidelberg”, through Dr. med. Gunther Schmidt, respectively - the founder of the Hypno-Systemic Approach and the “sysTelios Klinik”.
Couples Therapy, Family Therapy, Coaching, Supervision and Team-BuildingAdditionally to my clinical work I began in 1999 to offer psychotherapy, couples therapy and family therapy for ambulant clients. First as freelancer working for “Milton-Erickson-Institute Heidelberg” then in my own office in Heidelberg. Later I offered as well supervision, coaching and team-building services for companies and hospitals.
Private Office and Engagement for Medical DoctorsIn 2005 I founded “doc pro doc” - a company that aimed to support individuals in dealing with stress related diseases and companies in providing stress and burn out prevention on the management level as well as for their employees. The name “doc pro doc” (“doctor for doctor”) derived from the fact that the majority of my clients worked in the healthcare system, e.g., doctors, psychologists, psychotherapists, nurses, midwifes, etc. Being myself a member of this “high risk group” I felt and continue feeling particularly devoted to supporting the health and wellbeing of us helpers. Helpers that usually have a strong tendency to not ask for professional help - this applies in particular to doctors.
Stress and Burn Out - Teaching in Seminars and Prevention ProgramsForgoing the formal completion of a medical specialization such as “psychiatrist” I decided in 2007 to fully engage in my private office and business coaching and to end my clinical career, respectively. This allowed me to develop new and exciting seminars in the service of big companies which in turn gave me the chance to learn from thousands of clients. Between 2010 and 2016 around two-thirds to three-quarters of the participants of the biggest life-in-balance-program in Germany would opt for a coaching session to find out more about potentially helpful next steps (“Guidance”) towards consolidation of health.
This intense work with so many people in addition to the continuation of my psychotherapeutic work with individuals and couples definitely enhanced my capacity to efficiently guide clients through difficult territory. And to help them to grow in their own way and support their personal development as well as building successful teams and organizations. This includes to assist them in finding out what they need to do next. And it includes to support my clients in finding the best available support if it is not within my own capacities. In this respect my profound clinical medical experience was always of great benefit.
Presence Training and MindfulnessI want to acknowledge that my own Inner Work as a student of the Ridhwan School (Diamond Approach/A. H. Almaas) with its spiritual practices like meditation, inquiring into your own experience and practicing to be present led me into new territory and knowledge - in addition to my profound education in the scientific, medical and psychotherapeutic area.
I wish to include all my knowledge and be of service for my clients.
